THE MINISTRY OF APOSTLES - ESTABLISHING CHURCHES EVERYWHERE
An apostle is one that is sent out to share the good news of God's kingdom through Jesus Christ and start churches in people's homes. An apostle is not a special title nor do they have a position of authority over any other believer but they do have an important function in the body of Christ to establish churches on the firm foundation of Jesus Christ.
An apostle usually takes at least one other believer with him (perhaps another apostle or prophet) and shares the good news of God's Kingdom through Jesus Christ and prays for people's needs for miracles, healing and freedom. As people repent of sin, believe in Jesus Christ, devote their lives to him and his teachings, and receive the Holy Spirit, a church is formed in someone's home.
An apostle acts as an itinerant evangelist, teacher/mentor, minister of healing and freedom, and overseer for churches they plant until there are some local believers who are mature enough to oversee the church. For a time, often only a few months, the apostle teaches the church the principles and basics of Jesus teachings - repentance, forgiveness, heaven and hell and the consequences of sin, baptism, the Lords Supper, receiving the Holy Spirit and being led by the Holy Spirit, ministering healing and freedom using the gifts of the Holy Spirit, devotion and love for God and one another. Then the apostle moves on to plant another church elsewhere allowing this church to grow and become dependant on Jesus as their leader by the Holy Spirit rather than depending on man as their leader. The church will learn together, grow together, be accountable to one another, and multiply into other homes as it grows too large for one home - perhaps at 15 to 20 people.
An apostle occasionally visits the churches he has planted or sends another apostle they trust to encourage the church and help them deal with any problems. The apostle may appoint some local mature men to function as overseers to the church. The local churches may gather occasionally together as a larger group, especially when an apostle or prophet visits, to be encouraged and be a part of the larger body of Christ. When apostles and other workers are traveling they generally stay in believer's homes for short periods and perhaps receive a financial gift to help them on their way to their next destination. If an apostle/worker stays in one place for a time to help the local church then they will get a job to support themselves. Local overseers and deacons also have jobs to support themselves. No believer has authority over any other believer they are all brothers and sisters as God's children in his family.
An apostle may send letters or correspond with the churches they have planted if they cannot visit, to inform them of what is going on elsewhere, encourage them and help deal with any problems. These letters get circulated among the local churches.
Beware of false apostles/teachers/overseers - those who try to draw attention to themselves, exalt themselves, push to be the leader and lord over others instead of allowing Jesus to be the leader. Beware of those living in sin or condone it and beware of those who teach anything that is contrary to the teaching of Jesus. Anyone doing these things must be confronted by the church and if they will not repent should be shutout and not trusted by the church. We are to follow Jesus Christ as our leader together and live according to his ways.
A believer does not have to have the calling or gift of apostle to start a church gathering in a house although it is recommended and good to connect up with someone who has this gift in order to connect to the greater body of Christ and allow an apostle to visit and encourage the church.
